Give Your Child the Gift of Confidence, Discipline & Self-Defense
Looking for the perfect martial arts program for your young child in Naperville? The GBK1 Program at Gracie Barra East Naperville is specifically designed for children ages 4-8, providing a fun, safe, and structured introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that builds confidence, coordination, and essential life skills from the very first class.
Under the guidance of 4-time World Champion Professor Carlos “Escorrega” Lemos Jr. and our team of ICP-certified instructors, your child will develop physical abilities, mental focus, and character traits that benefit them far beyond the mats.

What Is the GBK1 Program?
The GBK1 Program is Gracie Barra’s introductory Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu curriculum for young children. Developed by Master Carlos Gracie Jr., this age-appropriate program uses games, drills, and engaging activities to teach fundamental movement patterns, basic self-defense concepts, and core values like respect, discipline, and perseverance.
Unlike adult training, GBK1 classes are designed around how children naturally learn—through play, positive reinforcement, and incremental challenges that keep them excited to come back. Our instructors specialize in working with young children, creating an environment where kids feel safe to try new things, make mistakes, and grow.
What Your Child Will Learn in GBK1
Foundational Movement Skills
Before learning complex techniques, children must develop fundamental movement patterns. GBK1 builds the physical foundation your child needs for Jiu-Jitsu and overall athletic development:
- Balance & Coordination – Games and drills that improve body control
- Falling Safely – Learning to fall without injury (essential life skill)
- Basic Positions – Age-appropriate introduction to guard, mount, and side control
- Crawling & Movement Patterns – Bear crawls, shrimping, and BJJ-specific locomotion
- Spatial Awareness – Understanding where their body is in relation to others
Age-Appropriate Self-Defense
Children learn simple, effective techniques to protect themselves from common childhood situations:
- Escaping grabs and holds from bigger kids
- What to do if pushed or tackled to the ground
- Creating distance and getting to safety
- Using voice and body language assertively
- Understanding when to seek adult help
Character Development
Research published in the European Journal of Sport Sciences confirms that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs help children develop self-discipline, self-confidence, and essential life skills that transfer beyond the gym. Our GBK1 curriculum intentionally cultivates:
- Respect – For instructors, training partners, and themselves
- Discipline – Following instructions and controlling impulses
- Perseverance – Continuing to try even when things are difficult
- Focus – Paying attention and staying on task
- Teamwork – Working cooperatively with partners
- Humility – Winning graciously and learning from losses
